Coming to the top: Network promotes mapping of independent funds that operate in the field of community philanthropy and social justice

By Camila Guedes

Reach and get to know organizations and initiatives – formal and informal – that work to donate financial resources to civil society – local communities, organizations, collectives and leaders – that work in the field of defense and recognition of rights, in a broad sense, and development of territories is fundamental to promoting the strengthening of community philanthropy and social justice.

In 2022, in partnership with Bridge to Bridge (pAp), the Philanthropy Network for Social Justice (RFJS) is developing research that aims to map and understand the field of independent philanthropy at the local/national level in Brazil and identify initiatives that donate to organizations, groups, collectives and leaders of society civil society that work in the field of promotion and defense of socio-environmental, human, racial, gender and citizenship rights in their intersections.

This is innovative research, which will contribute strategic information to the production of knowledge about the fields of community philanthropy and independent social justice in the country. Using qualitative and quantitative approaches, this study seeks to identify/map initiatives and gather information to understand how the various independent donor organizations operate, how they are constituted, how and with whom they connect, how they support other organizations, people or communities and how much they allocate for these supports.

Understand the areas and audiences of interest for donations, the regions of operation and where the resources are directed, the communication strategies and historical trajectories of the organizations, the grantmaking actions – how the selection processes are carried out to facilitate access to donations, monitoring, evaluation and accountability processes – are fundamental aspects of the study. The research will also look at sources of financing and the relationship with donors, partnerships and participation in networks, as understanding these articulations will be strategic for strengthening community philanthropy and social justice in the country, providing input for the construction of actions, projects and supports.

The initiative should generate innovative information and knowledge, giving visibility to diverse actors in the field, contributing to the recognition of collective actions led by political minorities and to the development of communities according to the needs and potential of the territories in which they operate.

We believe that the study will open up space to discover new ways of doing philanthropy, encouraging and fostering the culture of donation in the country.

Donate to Transform Seal

As a result of the research, communication materials and publications will be produced under the Donate to Transform Seal, which encourages and seeks to create a space for reflection and debate through the production of materials that promote community philanthropy and social justice as a strategy to achieve development led by communities, strengthening the demand for rights, with a focus on political minorities.
